Brighten up the dreary winter season with these three top coat trends.

With snow and cold weather fast approaching, you’ll need something warm to get you through the upcoming winter days and nights. Fortunately, the top coat trends of Winter 2010 will keep you toasty warm—and utterly stylish. Here are three outerwear styles for the upcoming season:

Hip military styles. Both coats and jackets are adopting a military flare this winter season. Also called band jackets, these military styles typically incorporate structured shoulders, sharply-tailored lines, and either gold or silver buttons. The military jacket also comes in a wide variety of colors and styles—from neutrals and bright hues to peacoats and cropped jackets. The only downside to this trend? It may look outdated by next fall, says SsasyChic.com. If you decide to buy a military jacket, try to keep your purchase under $100.

Purple, purple, purple. Forget about red—purple is the new “it” color for the wintertime. Both high-end designers like Dolce and Gabbana and popular store brands like J. Crew have offered purple coats in their winter line-ups. To get the most mileage out of this trend, opt for a classical peacoat in a flattering shade like eggplant. This way, you can wear your coat for many years to come.

Luxurious fur. Whether its synthetic or the real deal, fur coats are making a comeback this winter. During Milan and New York Fashion Weeks, numerous designers sent out models wearing oversized fur coats and fur-accented jackets. To pull of this trend, make sure to wear a fitted shirt or sweater underneath the coat to balance the bulkiness of the fur. Slip on a pair skinny jeans and over-the-knee boats to complete the look. Not wild about wearing an entire coat made from fur? Then choose a piece with fur accents around the collar or wrists.

Although the winter months can get dismal and dreary, make sure to brighten the season with a fabulous new coat.
