Fashion Week 2012 is starting off with a bang. There’s tons of designers, both new and veteran, promising to wow us with incredible designs. I’ve seen a few contenders with impressive skill. There was quite a bit of commotion surrounding the launch of his Karl Lagerfeld’s collection last month. He’s not the only person whose collection is creating a buzz this year. I have a few heavy contenders that are sure to be the best in show…Maybe? Let’s face it, fashion is subjective, that’s why ultimately you’ll be the judge! Let’s begin with designer Gary Graham!
His recent collection for fall ready to wear 2012 has great potential. Before we get into why his collection is so fabulous, let me give you a brief history on Mr. Graham. He was born and raised in Wilmington Delaware. He graduated from The Art Institute of Chicago. With his degree in costume and textile design, he creates clothing for women who love versatility. Gary Graham’s inspiration come from things with opposite contrast; like light and dark, or rustic and refined. He states that his clothing is for women who enjoy options in styling. This is something that is obvious in his designs. I love how he depicted the autumn season throughout his collection. He uses a common color palette; orange, burnt reds, browns and lime greens. The leggings the models are wore resemble the bark of the trees in autumn. The fabric textures are soft, with cable knit sweaters against gray wool vest, and charcoal black coats. I felt his vision was nicely executed. What do you think?
Christian Dior is my second fashion heavy weight. We all know the history behind Dior, especially since last year the firing of John Galliano made headlines. He was relieved of his position as head designer due to making racial slurs in a drunken haze. Bill Gaytton is the new head designer. Dior’s recent collection got rave reviews from fashion critics. The designs for Christian Diors Spring 2012 Couture collection are delicate and stunning. The dresses are ultra feminine in sheer neutral tones. The textures were soft, with layers upon layers of Tulle and silk. The embroidery of the gowns is impressive; patterns in floral prints, and cursive writing. The Crocodile textured dress was creative and edgy in patent leather. Bill Gaytten was able to execute his vision while still maintaining the Dior signature style. What’s your opinion of Dior’s new head designer?
Finally, my last fashion contender is Jean Paul Gaultier. His spring 2012 couture collection is inspired by the late and great Grammy award winning singer Amy Winehouse. The models were dressed in his latest designs, while sporting Amy’s iconic messy beehive, and cat eyeliner. His inspiration was not positively received by everyone. Amy’s’ father Mitch Winehouse found the show to be offensive and insensitive. He claimed it was too soon to do a tribute, and felt saddened by the fact that the models looked like his daughter, while wearing black veils. The controversy unfortunately took the spotlight away from the actual collections, which was fabulous. Jean incorporated some of Amy’s personal clothing style into his vision. For example, her waist synching corsets, and her pencil skirts. The models wore polo shirts with sexy cuts and bold bright colors. The suits had a hint of humor, with colorful wigs and asymmetrical stripped blazers. All and all I thought he did a good job. I’m sure Amy Winehouse would have been very proud of his work. It captured Amy’s eccentric, unique, and iconic vibe.
These designers are all very talented in their own right. I can’t wait to see what their fall 2013 collection will look like. These designers stood out for Fashion Week 2012 in my opinion. What designers stand out for you? What designers do you think are a sure fire hit? Comment below!
