Like most geeks in their early 30′s and late 20′s, I’ve seen the rise and fall of the Sidekick as a brand and a platform.  I remember the original black and white progeny of Danger (Software & OS) and Sharp (Hardware), and staring in wonder at the browser of the Sidekick 2.  Much like parachute pants and 90210 sideburns, the Sidekick brand has seen better days.  However, every good thing deserves a revival, and the folks at T-Mobile are hoping a complete makeover will make the brand relevant again.  The recipe for the new Sidekick 4G is a pretty impressive mix  Android (Froyo), a 3.5″ (480 X800) capacitive touchscreen powered by Samsung’s Cortex A8 Hummingbird Processor  (the same one found in the Galaxy S line).  Does this modern mix of hardware and software breathe new life into an old brand?  Does the Sidekick 4G offer enough to separate itself from the growing  competition? Lets find out.

Physical Design and Features:

The Sidekick makes some very bold design choices, especially in changing Android’s default fonts. I’m a fan: I think it’s jazzy and it stands out, and replacing tiny icons with bold words reminds me of Windows Phone 7, in a good way. Your taste may differ.

Throw away everything you already know about the Sidekick. The old Sidekicks were generally made by Sharp; they ran a unique OS designed by Danger that mirrored everything you did onto the Web. And they had their own service plans. The new Sidekick is from Samsung, and is an Android smartphone that uses the standard T-Mobile smartphone service plans.

The Sidekick 4G is an unusual Android phone whose design tries to balance current Android technology with the classic Sidekick look. Closed, the 5.0 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches (HWD), 5.7-ounce phone has the traditional, somewhat boat-shaped Sidekick look with four buttons surrounding a 3.5-inch, 800-by-480 LCD screen, and a tiny little optical mouse replacing the Sidekick’s track ball. The four buttons are Android’s Home, Menu and Back buttons, plus a special Jump key which you can configure to create keyboard shortcuts for various apps.

Performance:

With a 1 GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird CPU, the Sidekick 4G was able to crank out a high score of 1018. When putting the device through a daily routine I would find intermittent lag particularly in the browser when flash content was being used. I never felt the device slow to a crawl but there definitely were some times that lag was noticeable. Still, it was never frequent enough or slow enough that it interrupted any of my daily usage. I’m a power phone user and I use a multitude of apps at any given time so it’s possibly I was simply asking the phone to do too much. On the flip-side, a removal of the Android overlay with root and a custom ROM and the Sidekick 4G could crank out significantly improved performance results.

As for call quality, the Sidekick sounded pretty good. Callers sounded loud and clear over T-Mobile’s network, with no static or hiss. Like many T-Mobile phones, the Sidekick can also make calls over Wi-Fi, which is useful when reception is poor.

Multimedia and Camera:

Multimedia is a strength here. The Sidekick’s media app, called Media Room, combines music playback, video playback, and Slacker Radio. T-Mobile TV delivers smooth, full-screen streaming TV channels as well. The phone has about 350MB of available internal memory and comes with a 2GB MicroSD memory card; my 32GB SanDisk card worked fine.

You can sync music from your PC using the free doubleTwist software. All the usual music formats (including OGG) play fine through the 3.5-mm headset jack or over Bluetooth. Video up to 720p HD resolution also looks good, although the phone doesn’t support DIVX (it supports the similar XVID format, though.)

The Sidekick’s camera is just 3 megapixels, and it’s slow, with a 1.7-second autofocus delay. But if you can endure the wait, it takes terrific pictures—bright and sharp, they compare well to 5-megapixel images from other camera phones. The phone takes sharp, clear 720-by-480 videos at 29 frames per second, indoors and out. There’s no flash, but I find camera phone flashes pretty awful anyway. As long as you have a bit of light, this phone is perfect for capturing your next party.

There’s also a VGA camera on the Sidekick’s front that’s designed to work with T-Mobile’s Qik video chat, but we’ve never had much luck with Qik. The company was recently bought by Skype, though, so we should see some dramatic improvements in the quality of its video chat soon.

Messaging and Social Networking:

The Sidekick 4G comes loaded with two messaging features, Group Text and Cloud Text. Group Text lets you create, name, manage, and participate in reply-all group text messages. Cloud Text allows you to message your friends or groups from multiple platforms–including PCs. Unfortunately we couldn’t test Cloud Text, as it won’t be live until the Sidekick is commercially available (April 20).

Group Text was pretty easy to set up, however. You can create groups of your contacts and allow them to reply-all within the group regardless of what carrier they are on. This function came in handy when I was trying to organize who was bringing what for a dinner party. I can think of a million other uses for Group Text.

The Sidekick has a handy Universal Composer app for those times when you want to update multiple social networks at once. This idea isn’t exactly cutting-edge (we’ve seen it on most Android devices), but we always find it useful. You can also update your statuses using Google Voice Actions with the app.

Verdict:

Samsung certainly had a lot to live up to by taking over the Sidekick line from the folks at Sharp who had all but perfected a device with one of the most loyal followings in recent memory. Present and past Sidekick owners will find plenty to cheer about in terms of hardware and will likely forget within a few minutes that the back of the phone is stamped with the Samsung name. If you didn’t know any better and had never seen the Android overlay, at first glance you’d easily recognize this device as the unmistakable form factor of the Sidekicks of old. However, this time the Sidekick has a bigger processor and a much more powerful operating system.

The Sidekick 4G might be targeted to a younger set but I can absolutely see this device appealing to anyone who has been looking for the perfect QWERTY keyboard in an Android package.

This was our first official review phone from T-Mobile and I couldn’t have picked a better and more fun device to review. For just $99.99, the Sidekick is a well-designed Android phone that has plenty of depth in the messaging department, 4G speeds, a keyboard that makes me want to do a happy dance and it has Android. Its biggest competition in the T-Mobile lineup in the G2 which offers a larger screen and stock Android but it’s not nearly as much fun to play with and it costs $100 more.

The bottom line is that the Sidekick 4G has a lot to love and is a great addition to the T-Mobile lineup. The Android overlay may not be for everyone, especially Android purists but it’s worth checking out if only to feel how amazing the keyboard is. Samsung, Android and T-mobile have breathed new life into the Sidekick line and they’ve done it well.

ANDROID had zillions of tablets to offer in the last few months, from cheaply made China made versions to the more elegant devices from reputed brands. But none of them had the zing to compete with the much hyped iPad. Until later this year Motorola announced its dual core beast in the world of tablets. Enter Motorola XOOM, welcome to the device that expands Android beyond the hand-written letters it’s been in the past and turns it into a full-fledged book of a device. Optimized for its size, power, and intended set of purposes, this Motorola XOOM tablet has been fitted with Android mobile OS version 3.0 Honeycomb, that being the first version of the operating system made specifically for the tablet environment.

HARDWARE SPECIFICATIONS:

Processor: It has the latest Nvidia Tegra 2, 1 GHz dual-core processor with ULP GeForce GPU, 3D Graphics

Memory: It has 32GB flash memory, 1 GB DDR2 RAM and can support external memory up to 64GB.

Camera: There are 2 cameras on the device. 5 MP rear-facing camera with dual Light Emitting Diode flash and a 2 MP front-facing camera for video talking.

Connectivity: Xoom has a lot’s of connectivity features and these range from Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi 802.11 and 3G Rev. A, up to 3.1 Mbps (upgradable to 4G LTE with a maximum speed up to 21 Mb/s).

Sensors: 3-Axis Accelerometer, Compass, Proximity Sensor, Ambient Light Sensor, Gyroscope, Barometer.

Screen: Xoom has a 10.1 inch multi-touch capacitive touchscreen with a 1280 x 800 resolution. It weighs 730 gms with a dimension of 249 x 168 x 12.9 mm.

PERFORMANCE:

The tablet shows up ready to get to work — mostly. The 1280×800 screen is slightly higher in resolution than the iPad’s, and has a wider, movie-friendly aspect ratio. Its colors and sharpness don’t quite pop like the iPad’s, but that’s only noticeable side by side.

Beneath the glass is a powerhouse: A dual-core 1GHz processor backed with 1GB of RAM means that it has enough horsepower to support 3-D gaming and graphics intensive applications on the 1280×800 screen. It’s got two cameras — a 2MP front-facing one, and a 5MP one in the rear. It can shoot 720p video, and even output it through its HDMI cable.

Motorola pegs the Xoom’s battery life at 10 hours of video playback–same as the original iPad. Of course it doesn’t hurt that the Xoom does not yet support Adobe Flash, a feature that has been maligned as a battery killer by Apple and others. Motorola promises that Adobe Flash support is coming soon via an over-the-air-update, and is working with Adobe to optimize Flash for the Xoom’s Tegra 2 processor. Until then, if Flash compatibility is a must-have feature, your best course of action is to wait (or buy a Netbook, possibly for less).

With a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor beating with two 1GHz chips, it’s a powerful little grunt-nugget, and the 1280×800 resolution display is a great size at 10.1-inches, making it very much an iPad rival, especially when you consider the similar black bezel is a little thinner.

INITIAL IMPRESSIONS:

CONCLUSION:

Despite the absence of Flash support and the absence of 4G, there’s a lot to like about the Motorola XOOM. It’s a solid, discretely handsome slate, with strong battery life and whip-crack performance. Against it are the premium price tag and the ridiculous mandatory first-month data fee; frankly, Verizon have missed a trick by not giving buyers a free first month in the hope of getting them hooked to the convenience of 3G.

Much of the XOOM’s strength comes from Android 3.0 Honeycomb, and there’s little doubting that Google’s tablet-centric OS is the star of the show here. As we found in our full software review, it’s a convincing and polished platform, which brings a highly usable multitasking environment to the tablet marketplace, neatly distinct from the “oversized smartphone” accusations levied at previous Android slates.

I highly recommend the device, despite its hefty price tag and flaws. This device has the state of the art technology and its way beyond any of your iPads and Galaxy Tabs.

FIRST LOOK:

The Apple iPad 2 has been unveiled and we now know what the iPad 2 will look like, what the specifications are and what it can do. Physically, it’s a subtle, yet significant change. The iPad 2 is much thinner and lighter than its predecessor: in fact, at 8.8mm front to back, it’s thinner than the iPhone 4 and rivals Samsung’s upcoming super-slim Galaxy Tab 10.1. At 601g for the Wi-Fi version compared to 680g of the previous version it’s much more svelte, and when you pick it up the design changes are immediately noticeable. You could never call the original a porker, but this embarrasses it.

First up – the new chassis is an immediate and clear improvement; and the primary thing of note is that it is much flatter on its backside – and therefore more capable of sitting on a flat surface.It’s a minor improvement, but it makes a big difference to how comfortable the device actually feels in the hand as well as when you have it on a surface.

In the hand it’s like a giant iPod touch with a matte aluminium rear panel, and as you’d expect from Apple, it feels supremely well built, with nary a hint of creak nor mismatched seam anywhere. And the port, buttons and switches are all found in familiar places. There’s a front-facing VGA video camera, and in the corner on the rear, a 720p-capable camera too. As for the rumours of Thunderbolt integration, well they turned out to be just that – rumours.

One really nice feature about the new design is the new screen cover. Using magnets built into the case of the iPad 2 itself, this snaps neatly into place on the long, left edge of the device. It’s self-locating and protects the screen without adding too much to the bulk or weight.

The IPS display is unchanged, though, and that’s a mild disappointment: it’s still 9.7in from corner to corner, still sports a resolution of 1,024 x 768, which means it lags behind many of the upcoming Google Android Honeycomb tablets. It still looks lovely, though, and the IPS technology ensures great viewing angles and excellent contrast.

It was difficult to tell how the new processor, and the improvements to Safari, affect the performance of the device, but it did feel extremely responsive and the new hardware should give plenty of headroom for more demanding applications in future (the new iMovie and Garageband apps to name but two).

Just to reiterate, however, the iPad has a new dual-core 1GHz A5 processor, and uprated graphics. Apple claims “up to nine times” faster performance for the latter – a typically vague statement from Apple – but it again should give games developers headroom to develop even more ambitious titles. What should also add to the gaming experience is the new three-axis gyroscope, allowing finer control for steering in driving games and the like.

Conclusion

People who suggest this is an incremental upgrade are simply not looking at the bigger picture; the Apple iPad 2 feels and acts drastically differently from its predecessor.

The plethora of changes – some cosmetic, some under the hood – have boosted a device that felt like a luxury, to a device that is head and shoulders above its competitors at the moment.

The lighter, thinner iPad 2 is nicer to hold, nicer to use and nicer to look at – and if that’s not an important upgrade then maybe we’re missing the point.

Design:

The 15-inch MacBook Pro sports the same carved-from-a-single-chunk-of-metal unibody design as before, with a sturdy aluminum chassis and rounded edges. The overall look is classy and modern, though it makes upgrading individual components (such as the RAM and hard drive) difficult, as the entire bottom must be unscrewed.

The 15-inch MacBook Pro has the same dimensions (14.4 x 9.8 x 1 inches) and weight (5.6 pounds) as the previous version. While we definitely felt the extra heft while carrying the machine home, it did fit in our messenger bag, which is more than we can say about most 15-inch notebooks. The Dell XPS 15, for example, weighs a pound more and measures a bulkier 15 x 10.4 x 1.3 to 1.5 inches. Regardless, the MacBook Pro will take up an entire airline tray table.

Performance:

Booting into Mac OS X 10.6 took the 750GB hard drive a speedy 44 seconds, the same as the previous generation. In OS X, we duplicated a 4.97GB folder of multimedia in 2 minutes and 20 seconds, a rate of 36.4 MBps. That’s about 12 MBps faster than the category average.

The benefits of the built-in media encoder on Intel’s second-gen Core processor were also evident when we transcoded a 114MB MPEG-4 to AVI using Oxelon Media Encoder. It took the new 15-inch MacBook Pro just 37 seconds, 10 seconds faster than the previous model, and 45 seconds faster than the average. We then used CyberLink MediaEspresso to convert a 5-minute 1080p video to an iPod touch format. The program, using the AMD GPU to accelerate conversion, took 1 minute and 24 seconds to complete the task. That’s 46 seconds faster than the category average.

MacBook Pro has a great battery,on the LAPTOP Battery Test (continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi), the notebook lasted 5 hours and 25 minutes; that’s an hour and a half longer than the mainstream average, and almost equal to the ultraportable average, but it’s below the expected 7-hour runtime Apple quotes.

Conclusion:

Apple’s update MacBook Pro line brings both improved performance and battery life, as well as debuting the speedy Thunderbolt I/O technology.

The new 15-inch MacBook Pro not only outperforms its predecessor, but also just about every other notebook by a fair margin. It has the same svelte design, yet incorporates next-generation Intel and AMD processors as well as Thunderbolt for high-speed data transfers.

Pros: Impressive performance and battery life; next-generation Thunderbolt I/O technology; dual-mode graphics for performance or longer battery life

Cons: Expensive; heavy; battery not user-replaceable

Design:

The 600D represents an evolution of Canon’s long-running entry-level design, with the articulated screen being the most significant difference to a basic layout that dates back to the Rebel XSi /EOS 450D. There’s a new grip for your left hand, and the mode dial reverts to a knurled (as opposed to ridged) design, but on the face of it little else is different relative to the 550D. So the body is covered with direct access buttons for most of the major shooting functions, which are used in concert with the 4-way controller or main control dial on the top plate to modify settings.

Perhaps the most important changes, though, from the photographer’s point of view, as those which aren’t at all obvious from simply looking at pictures. The grip is improved, and the buttons for key shooting controls such as ISO and exposure compensation have been enlarged and given deeper travel, making them much more positive in use. This makes the 600D feel more like a serious tool than any of its predecessors.

Performance:

The Rebel T3i / EOS 600D offers virtually everything you need for beautiful photos and HD movies. The high-resolution 18 megapixel CMOS APS-C format provides excellent image quality for large-scale prints or Enlargements with great detail. Together with the DIGIC 4 image processor with 14-bit image processing, it ensures brilliant color and subtle color gradations. The convincing performance of the camera in low light also helps in dark locations for clear images with natural atmosphere – a key criterion for this is the great ISO range of ISO 100 to ISO 6,400, which can even be expanded to ISO 12,800. The Rebel T3i / EOS 600D enables continuous shooting at 3.7 frames per second. The focus (even off-center subjects) took the wide-area AF with nine AF points, the central AF sensor provides cross-sensitized with particularly high accuracy. Various automatic shooting modes allow the recording of stunning images and full HD (1080p) with an ease that implement beginners from the very beginning of their creative ideas. A new menu on the screen with selectable instructions will help the practical functions of the camera – without a long read – to know and develop their photographic skills.

Conclusion:

From the initial handling of the EOS 600D, there’s little doubt that this is the most feature-rich entry-level Canon yet. In fact ‘entry-level’ is increasingly becoming a misnomer in this range, as the 600D offers a wealth of features that we’re much more used to seeing on ‘enthusiast’ models (which tend to be distinguished by having pentaprism viewfinders and twin control dials). Indeed the 600D comes remarkably close to its more expensive big brother, the 60D, in terms of features alone.

I really loved this magazine app and consider it a must have for everything fashion.

The app has an amazing holographic image of Emma Watson on its December 2010 issue that is stunning. After seeing it, I was tempted to purchase the January issue just to see its cover. The app boasts article skimming and quick access to content. Its exclusive articles have an abundance of companion videos that really take advantage of the iPad format. Though the app may be less robust than some of the other apps listed, its content makes it a worthy addition.

On the iPad, the Gilt App maintains the same exclusive and high end feel the website and company have built it’s entire reputation on. For mens, womens, and children’s clothing, the Gilt app displays the day’s designer sales in a gridded format while listing active and upcoming sales on the sidebar. Clicking through to the actual sale items takes you to a fully interactive screen where the fashionable iPad user can browse images, view available sizes, read up on sizing information, and finally the option to buy the sale item from the iPad.

While the actual pricing and fashion offered on the site are beyond me, the app is definitely a must download for fashionistas and fashionistos everywhere.
