This is just a running list of the fashion wins and fashion mistakes we took notice of during this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. This list isn’t in any specific order. Perhaps we’ll give this list a more significant order once all the shenanigans we’ve viewed sinks in.
Fashion Mistakes of the 2009 VMAs
- While on the red carpet, asking the rockband Green Day what designer they were wearing.
- Katy Perry’s continuance of the flashy corset top (with Hellraiser spikes).
- Pink showing up on a fire truck wearing the same dress that Shakira was wearing on the red carpet.
- Shakira making referencing to Sway’s dreadlock headwrap in an effort to compliment him on his style for the evening.
- On the red carpet, letting former astronaut Buzz Aldrin (I know MTV was trying to be creative with the whole “moon man” reference) list off the names of rock groups, in what seemed like a dogged effort to create a “cool” TV moment. (Joel McHale needs to bring this up on the Soup).
- After ending off with Buzz Aldrin, MTV News correspondent Tim Kash passing by designer Roberto Cavalli to talk to Taylor Swift.
- Alicia Keys’ dress.
- Beyonce’s Hair. The crimped-curly hairstyle isn’t a good look on Beyonce.
- Kanye West’s hair cut. We think Kanye’s too grown to sport the random zig-zag lines and patterns cut into his hair.
- Russell Brand’s high heel boots.
- Lady Gaga not revealing the designer’s name who styled the hat and mask she wore on the red carpet and during the show.
- Kanye West snatching the microphone from the Taylor Swift as she accepted her award for Best Female Video, to salute Beyonce as having “the best music video to come out this year”. Then running off the stage in true Kanye West fashion. “Cocaine is a hell of a drug.”
- Jim Cantiello. No thank you.
- Tracy Morgan’s attempt at humorous banter.
- Lil’ Mama (a judge on America’s Best Dance Crew) trying to step on stage with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Now You’re in New York” performance. Did she think other native New Yorkers were going to jump up on the stage while Jay-Z was performing. We like how Jay-Z just brushed her off. She looked like she was 12 years old standing behind real star power. You don’t upstage Jay-Z.
Fashion wins of the 2009 VMAs
- Janet Jackson’s costume, hair, wardrobe and performance the tribute to her brother Michael Jackson.
- Shakira’s dress, before Pink showed up with exact same dress.
- Russell Brand’s oh-so-skinny jeans, and short-sleeve blazer, and Slasher-style Top-hat.
- Taylor Lautner. Enough said. (And yes he was wearing a Calvin Klein suit).
- Robert Pattinson. Enough said. (Doesn’t matter what he’s wearing).
- Lady GAGA arriving in an eccentric fashion with Kermit the Frog as her date.
- Jack Black’s muscle suit costume promoting the new video game featuring him as a main character — Brutal Legend.
- Taylor Swift’s red dress, and ability to shake off the incident with Kanye West and still give a live performance in a mock subway stage set for the ceremony. Taylor Swift is symbol of what young American girls want to aspire to.
- Megan Fox. Enough said.
- Kristen Stewart’s dress.
- What are we saying? The cast of Twilight were big fashion winners of the evening.
- Gerard Butler’s appearance at the VMAs (THIS IS SPARTA!).
- Eminem’s haircut. The edge-up is clean.
- Pink’s trapeze performance. Pink is like a walking talking bicep. She is so fit.
- After accepting her award for “Single Ladies”, Beyonce giving Taylor Swift her moment to give thanks to her fans. A very big and gracious move on Beyonce’s part.
- A motorcade entrance, with Jay-Z stepping out of the Jay-Z wearing the Michael Jackson-Thriller-inspired leather vest.
