If you have ever read a ‘Chic Lit‘ book, watched Sex & the City, Confessions of a Shopaholic, or even heard the term “sample size” then you may know what a sample sale is.

Sample sales used to be known exclusively to the Fashion Industry.   A chance to buy premiere designer clothing and accessories for a fraction of the cost led women to flock in droves to too small rooms with too small stairways in hopes of getting the “it bag” or must have shoes.  Ultimately the secret got out and websites and exclusive “lists” developed; allowing women who could fit into the ” sample size” wear have the opportunity to score on the inside secret.

Daily Candy became the go-to website for finding the sales in New York and eventually would be the go to website for all major cities who had the secretive sales.  For years it has been an obsession for many, and some may even say “Trunk Shows” held in boutiques are an extension of the popularity sample sales incurred.

In 2001 vente-privee.com was debuted in Europe with a concept that would change the face of the relationship of buyer and retailer.  Vente-privee was founded by a Business School graduate who saw a way for excess merchandise to be sold at the end of the Season.  The popularity grew and with it the United States welcomed their own websites such as Gilt Groupe, The Outnet, Hautelook, Luxe Club One, www.topsecret.com and the ever exclusive Ideeli which are all members only sites that hold their own daily and weekly sample sales.

Comcast owns DailyCandy, which prides itself on not accepting payment to be featured on their site.  The three million subscribers can find luxurious sales and things to do in twelve major cities and an online featurette for everywhere else.

The announcement that ‘Swirl’ would be a Daily Candy partnered sample sale site that allowed buyers privacy and more arm room than chasing down the latest “it bag” with an 80% sav

ings while maintaining the authenticity of the garment garned media praise and smiles from Fashionistas everywhere.
