It’s not easy dealing with people; let alone people in the fashion industry. That’s why it’s always refreshing to bump into someone, well… refreshing. FASHIFY got a hold of one such person: Jonyrose.
Jonyrose: Model & Photographer – A Talented Yet Humble Double-Threat
One part photographer. One part model. Often times, the day-to-day of just one these roles more than fulfilling to the creative soul. Jonyrose is an exception to this rule. So why do take on the roles of both a photographer and a model? Is it about reward? or passion?
After doing this interview, FASHIFY agrees: The best of both worlds, in one humble being. Her work speaks volumes about her passion and each image not only has “smack” but also has a signature “flare” about them. We took the time to do some Q & A and to give our readers some insight from this double-threat’s point of view.
1. Which do you find more rewarding, being a model or a photographer? and why.
Since my passions have always been both Photography and Fashion, I would have to say being a photographer is a lot more rewarding, because it is my personal vision. I get to portray my own style of art in each image and I can truly call it my own. It has become my life: photography.
2) Which are you more passionate about? And why.
Photography; to be honest I started modeling after I figured out how much I loved photography and fashion. Once I knew you could combine these elements, I had to be apart of it. Modeling was my foot in the door. It was the opportunity I needed to get to work behind the scenes, to watch the photographer and gather insight. Modeling is something fun for me to do and collect images of myself as a young adult that I can cherish later in life, photography is my job. My job is my passion.

Although she still models, Jonyrose feels more at home behind the camera, creating her own brand of visually striking images.
3. What is an aspect of your career you DISLIKE?
That’s a hard one. I love my job, but I would have to say the competition. There are so many wonderful artists/photographers to compete with. But all of us are so different, which makes it less intimidating, which is what I use as the silver lining. All true photographers have something different to bring to the table. For me I feel that I bring a new and young perspective into the field. As a 22 year old female, that also models, I can relate to the models; and I do.
4. How does the clientele found locally differ from other areas, like LA, New York etc. or other places you’ve traveled? Where do you find consistent work?
Miami has a style that is one of a kind, truly original. You can get all different aspects of life here. One day I shoot a 6 foot tall model from Ohio and the next day I am shooting a model from Venezuela. You have all different races and ethnicities here in Miami, which is very refreshing. In Texas, where I just moved here from, it’s a whole different fashion world, in that Austin is just jumping on the fashion/photography wagon. People in Texas have very different goals when beginning their modeling careers. I have not had the opportunity to work in LA or NYC quite yet. I’m still working on my book while here in Miami. But very soon, I will be venturing to the heart (LA) and soul (NYC) of the fashion world. It’s inevitable. Consistent work comes to those who are consistent. Stay on your game and work will come to you. In this business you have to do everything yourself to get to where you want to be. And I live my life by that as well.

5. Who, in each industry currently (Photog & model) inspire you? Why?
I truly get inspired every day, by people walking on Ocean Drive all the way to viewing other photographers work, and everywhere in between. I can’t think of a specific name, because I don’t dwell on others work, I am too focused on my own. But I would have to say everyday life really plays a huge role in my final images. Just be yourself and work will start pouring out of you, is what I have found so far.
6. Are there any requirement(s) when working with you?
As a photographer we are here to capture all varieties of mankind. I will say that I will photograph pretty much anything the client would like me to. I thrive on fashion and therefore most of my work is kissed with an editorial, commercial, and high fashion feel. The only thing I can hope for height and true modeling skills, but they are not requirements. If you call yourself a model, then that’s what you should know how to do.
Jonyrose is in her element as she photographs a model in Miami.
7. Everyone has a horror story in our industry. What is one of your worst experiences you’ve never forgotten?
I don’t want to say this… knock on wood. I really haven’t had a HORROR story. There are always going to be Diva models (ask any photographer), and those who do not show when your whole crew is waiting!! But overall I am very laid back and easy going so I just don’t let small things get to me. If it’s not going well, that’s life. Move on. There is always going to be another model, another shoot, another image. Just keep your head up and keep doing what you have planned to do, I just always prepare myself for any situation.
8. What was your BEST experience?
Easy: I was recently presented with the Best Fashion Photographer People’s Choice award at Austin Fashion Week 2009. I worked very hard to get my name out there and after just two short years I had many fans and people that supported me and my vision. That’s when I knew Photography was what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. To win an award for all your hard work is one of the best feelings. I can only wish everyone in any line of work can get the recognition like I did that night. To speak in front of all my fellow photographers and models was surreal. Funny thing is I didn’t even know I would have to make a speech if I won… I was totally unprepared. It was also the first Fashion Week in Austin, and true to Texan style, the award was a Gold Boot! I feel lucky to have given my passion chance, and to be rewarded for doing something I really love.
9. Any insight you can give to people that are pursuing and/or are looking to further their careers in our industry?
I can say is that there is a lot of competition out there; everyone is trying just as hard as you, and some try a lot harder. I was told by a mentor ‘just get out there and shoot, shoot, shoot, especially when you just starting out. You will learn something new every time.’ That has been some of the best advice I have ever received.
Another thing I do repeat to myself daily is: Good things do not come easy, and everything happens for a reason. Just get out there, do your thing. Talk to people, and always have an open mind to whatever situation you are put in. it really makes this crazy life a lot easier.
